Nannies/Mother's Helps

KidsWhat can I expect from my nanny?

A nanny's duties are usually described as "General Nursery Duties". This comprises of the general day-to-day care of the child/children, keeping their bed/bedrooms clean and tidy, beds made daily, clean bed linen as required, toys tidied away, clothes washed/ironed and put away. If there is a playroom, this should be kept clean and tidy as well.

All the relevant meals for the child/ren should be taken care of by the nanny. If there are special dietary requirements, this should be made clear at the interview.

It is the nanny's responsibility to see that any activities the children are commited to, that they arrive and get picked up at the relevant times, i.e. swimming, ballet classes, football, after school clubs, soft play, mother and toddler.

What sort of salary would I be expected to pay?

A qualified nanny/mother's help with at least 2/3 years experience would expect to be paid on an average day of 8am-6pm £280-£350 per week Net. An unexperienced, i.e. less than 2 years childcare experience with no qualification would expect to earn somewhere in the region of £250 per week net.

Live-in positions are usually around £20-£25 per week lower as their accommodation and food bills are taken care of by their employer.baby

Am I responsible for paying tax and NI for my nanny?

Yes. As you become their employer you are required by law to produce a pay slip stating the tax and National Insurance you have paid on behalf of your nanny.

We can provide further information on this subject as we use a reputable company that provide the services of a Payroll.

Does my nanny have to be a Daily or a Live-in?

This is entirely up to you. If you require a "live-in" nanny you will need to provide a room for her and a television to enable her to stay in her room during her time off for privacy etc. You will need to state whether or not you require a live-in or a daily nanny when you contact the agency.

How much holiday is required and is it paid?

A nanny/mother's help working 4 days per week or more would expect the statutory 4 weeks paid holiday per year. Anything above this is at the employer's discretion. The time at which this 4 week period is taken is between the nanny and the employer. For a nanny/mother's help working less than 4 days per week, i.e. 1, 2, or 3 days, two weeks is a reasonable period of paid holiday depending on how many days she is working.
